Management of Evolving Constraints in a Computerised Engineering Design Environment

چکیده
Engineering design process has an evolutionary and iterative nature as design artifacts develop through series of changes before the final solution is achieved. Design is performed based on design requirements which are mainly specified as restrictions on the properties of the design artifact, and are considered to be design constraints. A common problem encountered during the design process is that of constraint evolution, which may involve the identification of new constraints and modification or omission of existing constraints for a number of reasons. These reasons would include changes in customer requirements, changes in the technology, change in the production cost or to improve the performance. As design is an evolutionary process where a solution is sought by trial and error, integrity constraints in engineering design will not remain fixed but will tend to evolve during the design process. This evolving nature of constraints has made the support for automatic integrity validation, non-trivial as it imposes number of key issues that need to be dealt with. We have been able to successfully address these issues with respect to the engineering design environment and we identify how one could meet the challenges through effective management of these evolving constraints for engineering designs. Thus the original design will continue to exist while supporting the creation of new design versions to meet the changes.

Fault-Tolerant Control of a Nonlinear Process with Input Constraints
A Fault-Tolerant Control (FTC) methodology has been presented for nonlinear processes being imposed by control input constraints. The proposed methodology uses a combination of Feedback Linearization and Model Predictive Control (FLMPC) schemes. The resulting constraints in the transformed process will be dependent on the actual evolving states, making their incorporation in the de...
متن کاملIntegrity Constraint Management for Design Object Versions in a Concurrent Engineering Design Environment
Concurrent Engineering (CE) is a product development approach which requires collaborative multidisciplinary team environment with efective communication. Due to the evolutionary nature of the engineering design process it is necessary to provide support for version management. The version model should be provided with an integrity checking mechanism to assure the consistency of object versions...
متن کاملThe Least Cost Design of Water Distribution Networks Using Water Quality Constraints
Water quality is a very important issue related to people health, but it is not usually considered in water distribution networks (WDNs) design. In this paper, new constraints such as free residual chlorine and the quality performance index are incorporated into the least cost design of water distribution networks. EPANET2 was applied for the hydraulic and quality analysis of water distributio...
متن کاملImproving for Drum_Buffer_Rope material flow management with attention to second bottlenecks and free goods in a job shop environment
Drum–Buffer–Rope is a theory of constraints production planning methodology that operates by developing a schedule for the system’s first bottleneck. The first bottleneck is the bottleneck with the highest utilization. In the theory of constraints, any job that is not processed at the first bottleneck is referred to as a free good. Free goods do not use capacity at the first bottleneck, so very...
متن کاملارزیابی و رتبه بندی اهمیت نسبی الزامات فنی محصول با تلفیق مدلهای QFD و DEA: مطالعه موردی (صنایع کاشی و سرامیک)
This article aims to evaluate the relative importance of product design requirements in Quality Function Deployment (QFD) environment taking customer needs and producers constraints. Considering the matrix of QFD, we can take the customers needs into consideration only. However, we present a technique that can take into account the production constraints in the product design process as well as...
